Why did you do your 1st triathlon?
I wanted to have a BIG 60th birthday. Not “big,” in terms of presents or partying, but “big” in terms of making an impact on my life. I wanted to stretch myself and do something I’d never done before. I wanted a “go-big-or-go-home” life event.”
A 73-year-old cycling friend and cancer survivor who began doing triathlons when she was 70 inspired me. There was a women’s-only sprint tri coming up in Greenville, SC, the week after my birthday. It was appropriately named, “You Go Girl.” As a birthday present to myself, I registered for the race. When I placed in my age group, I was hooked.
Why are you still doing triathlons?
Honestly, I’ve asked myself that a number of times the past three years — specifically because the swim has been so tough for me. In my three of my four open-water swims, I’ve been last or close to it. I love the discipline of training, the exhilaration of the finish, the inspiring people I’ve met and the great community of triathlon.
But, I almost let the difficulty and fear of the swim steal those things from me. I had another reckoning with myself two months ago and decided triathlon was a calling on my life for this season: I was in it for the long haul. I trained consistently in the pool for six weeks and had a good swim at the Parris Island Triathlon last month. I went from discouragement to encouragement. I’m so glad I didn’t quit.
What is your favorite race day photo and why?
This photo was taken at “You Go Girl” the second year I did it. I had gotten leaner that year, which I like, and I like that you can clearly see the word “Finish.” It reminds me that it’s not how we start, but how we finish in life, that matters most.
This is so inspiring! I strive to take good enough care of my body that I will be as capable as you, Vicki, as I continue to ascend into different age groups!
