Why did you do your 1st triathlon?
I happened to watch a YouTube video where a number of triathletes in wet suits were getting into the ocean and swimming deftly. Being a pool swimmer, I often wondered what it would be like to swim in open water. The waves intimidated me to an extent that I developed a mental block about sea swimming. Attending an open-water swim clinic in Santa Cruz, CA, helped me overcome these psychological barriers.
It was a life-changing moment, and I ended up registering for my first open-water triathlon. Being a decent runner and a cyclist, my first triathlon, Tri Santa Cruz, was an enjoyable experience. The concept of doing three different sports in one race was challenging and exhilarating at the same time. Training for a triathlon was a lot more fun compared to marathon training which can get monotonous. I have been hooked on triathlons ever since and have signed up for Ironman 70.3 Santa Rosa in July 2018.
Why are you still doing triathlons?
Triathlon is not just a race. Its a journey where every moment challenges and humbles you at the same time. I learned to brave unfavorable conditions like turbulent waves, the possibility of a flat tire or leg cramps and still make my way to the finish line.
I realized that even if things do not work out the way I want them to, I should still be able to take it in stride. Every moment in a triathlon is not just a test on my physical endurance but is also a mental game. The best part about doing triathlons is also the number people that you meet during this journey. The entire experience of cheering other people in their quest exemplifies the spirit of this sport, and you come out of it a better person.
What is your favorite race day photo and why?
This photo was taken at the finish line at Tri Santa Cruz in 2017. When I look at it, I see a stronger me – one who has fought her inner demons, psychological blocks and is now embarking on her journey as an open-water triathlete. Something that I thought would remain only in my aspirations. Today it’s a reality.
Swetha, I love this photo! I have done two triathlons in Santa Cruz, and those beach finishes are so tough! Running though sand at the very end is so hard, but so rewarding! And it is such a beautiful part of the world.
Thank you so much Amy! Yes the sand finishes are really grueling but rewarding as you say! Makes the journey really worthwhile.
